How to Create a Puzzle Piece

Puzzles can be fun challenges to exercise your brain and stimulate your mind. Homemade puzzle pieces can be a GOOD way to create your own fun at home, and can make for GREAT gifts to give to friends and families. Luckily, making a puzzle piece isn't hard to do.

Things You'll Need

  • Cardboard
  • Exacto knife
  • Markers or acrylic latex paint
  • Pencil
  • Shellaque spray sealant
  • Take a square piece of cardboard and cut it with an Exacto knife to the size you desire for your homemade puzzle. You can do small puzzles to take on the go, or a big puzzle to do at home with family and friends.

  • Draw in pencil your puzzle design onto the cardboard. Pencil will ensure that you can undo any mistakes in your drawing. Draw or paint over your design on the cardboard either using acrylic latex paint or markers.

  • Spray your cardboard with Shellaque sealant to preserve the design and colors of your puzzle. Allow the sealant to dry as directed on the packaging before moving on.

  • Take a pencil and lightly draw the shapes of your puzzle pieces over the photo. Puzzle pieces can be in any shape you want, as long as they fit together to make your picture. For small children, you can make simple squares; or for a challenging puzzle, you can make various shaped and sized pieces.

  • Use your Exacto knife and a flat surface to cut out your puzzle pieces where you have marked in pencil. Once you are done, you will have your very own homemade puzzle pieces.
