How to Convert a Car Battery Into a Power Outlet

Save

Household devices such as televisions, vacuum cleaners, and lamps are all powered by household electrical current received from a wall outlet. There may be times, however, when a household electrical device must be used but the only power source is an automobile battery. To change the direct current, or DC, battery power into household alternating current, or AC, power, a device called a power inverter is needed.

Things You'll Need

  • Automobile battery
  • Power inverter with clamp input terminals
  • Connect the red (positive) power inverter terminal to the positive (+) battery post. Connect the negative (black) power inverter terminal to the negative (-) battery post.

  • Turn on the power inverter. Allow the power inverter to "warm up" for at least five seconds.

  • Plug the electrical device (such as a lamp, vacuum cleaner, etc.) into the inverter power outlet.
