How to Clean an Ostrich Feather Duster

Save

Ostrich feather dusters come in all shapes and sizes. They are great for dusting because ostrich feathers attract dust like no other feather around. Feather dusters have been used for centuries to keep homes, businesses and other establishments clean and neat. Cleaning ostrich feather dusters is not complicated or difficult; all it takes is a little bit of time, which is probably why these cleaning utensils are growing in popularity.

Things You'll Need

  • Sink and a bucket, or a double-sided sink
  • Empty soda bottle
  • Mild soap
  • Warm water
  • Fill one side of the sink with water and some mild soap.

  • Fill the other side of the sink or bucket with fresh, clean water.

  • Put the ostrich feathers into the soapy water, fully submerged.

  • Twirl the feathers around until most of the dust is off. You will know this because the water will turn a darker color.

  • Switch to the clear water. Repeat the same process in the clear water.

  • Run cool water over the feathers until the water runs clean of soap and dust.

  • Shake vigorously outside to remove as much moisture as possible.

  • Set the handle in the empty soda bottle, feathers up, to finish drying.

Tips & Warnings

  • If the handle of the ostrich duster doesn't quite fit into the soda bottle, try cutting off the bottle top to make it fit, or hang it upside down on a clothesline. If the feathers become static, place it back into the soda bottle and put into the bathroom and wait for someone to get a shower. The static electricity will dissipate after being in a room with high humidity.
