How to Remove a Pontiac Headrest

Save

The headrests on your Pontiac are designed to control head movement in the case of an accident, but there are plenty of reasons to want to take them off. Maybe you want to install headrest monitors for the kids in the backseat, or maybe you just need to install a new set of seat covers. In this case, the project vehicle is a 2002 Pontiac Grand Am, but the process is similar for other vehicles as well.

Things You'll Need

  • Small flathead screwdriver
  • Sit in the car, then turn around so that you're facing the back of the seat, and looking at the headrest. Grab it by the sides and lift it up so that the headrest is extended all the way.

  • Look at the plastic tabs on the bottom of the headrest that retain it in place. There are two large flat slots on each of these tabs. Place the flathead screwdriver into the slot on one post with one hand, while gently lifting up that side of the headrest with the free hand.

  • Repeat the process from step 2 on the remaining headrest retainer, then lift the headrest vertically off of the seat. Repeat the process for any other headrests you want to remove.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you plan on taking off a lot of Pontiac headrests, there is a specific tool made by GM to remove the headrests, but a small flathead screwdriver works just as well. If you have a model before 2000, an Allen key works in the same fashion.
