How to Use Garage Floor Epoxy Paint on Wood

Ryan Lawrence

Most do-it-yourselfers love the challenge of a new project. They also usually like to keep costs down as much as possible. This leads many of them to use leftover materials from past projects on new ones. While this is usually inadvisable, there are certain instances where it's okay.

If you'd like to use garage floor epoxy paint on wood, you can do so without much trouble. However, there are a few minor steps of preparation you need to go through, or you could end up having difficulties with adhesion.

Tip

If the wood was previously painted, you only need to prime raw wood exposed by scraping. There's no need to prime over areas that have already been painted. However, never attempt to paint over raw wood with garage floor epoxy paint, or you may have trouble with adhesion. You may want to use a roller if you need to apply garage floor epoxy paint to larger areas.

  1. Wash away dust and dirt from the wood using a pressure washer.

  2. Scrape away any loose or peeling paint using a metal putty knife. Skip this step if the wood is unpainted.

  3. Apply primer to the wood using the 3- to 4-inch paintbrush. Paint from left to right (or up and down) along with the grain of the wood, being careful to smooth any drips or runs.

  4. Allow the primer to dry for at least two hours.

  5. Clean the paintbrush using warm water.

  6. Pour the epoxy resin into the 5-gallon bucket. Add the catalyst and stir the mixture thoroughly with a wooden stir stick.

  7. Repeat Step 3, applying the garage floor epoxy paint this time, on top of the latex primer.
