How to Change the Throttle Body on a Camaro LS1

If you are looking to increase the horsepower in your Camaro, replacing the throttle body with one that is larger in diameter will do just that. A larger throttle body allows more ambient air to enter the engine and will increase the horsepower and torque of your Camaro LS1 engine. Replacing the throttle body is one of the easiest upgrades you can do on your Camaro; it's cheap, doesn't take much of your time and can be done with basic tools.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

      Open the hood and prop.

    • 2

Remove the air filter tubing from the throttle body by unscrewing the hose clamp with a screwdriver and pulling it off.

    • 3

Pull the throttle blade opener back and remove the throttle cable from it.

    • 4

Remove the throttle body from the intake manifold with a ratchet. There are four bolts that need to be removed.

    • 5

Scrape off any gasket material left on the intake manifold with a razor blade. You can also use 500 grit sandpaper to remove the gasket material.

    • 6

Place the new gasket on the new throttle body and place the throttle body on the intake manifold. Then, using a ratchet, tighten the four bolts down to secure the throttle body.

    • 7

Pull the throttle blade opener back and reinstall the throttle cable.

    • 8

Place the intake tube back onto the throttle body and tighten the hose clamp.

Tips & Warnings

  • Instead of replacing the throttle body, you can also use a Dremel tool to port it. Porting simply means removing material from the throttle body to enlarge its diameter. Enlarging the diameter allows more air flow to enter the engine and, consequently, an increase in performance.

  • Wear safety glasses while working on your Camaro to protect your eyes from injury.
