Handbags provide a crucial accessory to the wardrobes of many women, making it important to keep the bags clean and presentable. Residue can build up on the exterior of the bag, and the interior lining is subject to spills and smears from pens, lipstick, and other items typically found in a bag. Cleaning a bag with leather straps is a bit more difficult than simply tossing in the washing machine, but by keeping a few simple ingredients on hand, you can clean the bag and straps with ease.

Step 1

Wipe down the bag and straps using unscented baby wipes. Use one wipe for any exterior residue on the bag, a new wipe for interior lining, and an additional wipe for the straps. Use a clean wipe after every few swipes to prevent spreading residue to other parts of the bag.

Step 2

Mix 1 cup of warm water with 1/2 tsp. mild detergent, such as delicate laundry detergent or dish detergent. The detergent will be safe for both the bag fabric and the leather straps.

Step 3

Dip a clean cloth in the soapy solution, twist out excess water, and wipe the bag. Wipe gently over the interior and exterior of the bag, as well as the leather straps and any other hardware.

Step 4

Wipe the bag, straps, and hardware once more with a clean, dry cloth to absorb any moisture, and the bag is ready for use again.

Tip

For stubborn stains that do not easily wipe away with baby wipes or the mild cleaning solution, take the bag to a professional dry cleaning facility for expert assistance.
