How to Determine the Engine Code From the VIN on a Chevrolet Truck

Every car has a VIN, or Vehicle Identification Number, which provides specific information about the car. Within the VIN code for Chevrolet vehicles, the eight characters of the 17-character sequence provide information about the engine. This information is important for individuals working with rebuilt vehicles or vehicles requiring extensive engine work.
Step 1
Locate the VIN number beneath the windshield of the car on the driver's side of the vehicle. If you cannot read the VIN from this location, you can refer to the Certificate of Title and Registration or the door pillar on the driver's side, which also contains the VIN number.
Step 2
Verify that the first three digits of the vehicle's VIN are 1GC, which is representative of the World Manufacturer Identification number assigned to Chevrolet trucks by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO).
Step 3
Locate the eight characters of the VIN sequence. Use the following list to determine the engine type based upon the letter or number.
