How to Cut a Large Star From Standard Poster Board

Large poster-board stars can make eye-catching decorations or signs, and cutting them out is simple and fast. The best way to get the outline of the star onto the poster board is to trace around a paper template--you'll get straight lines, good proportions and no erased goofs. There are printable star templates online that you can enlarge with a photocopier, or you can create your own design from large paper. Cutting a large star from poster board takes just minutes and yields a festive and useful shape.

Things You'll Need

  • Paper template
  • 1 sheet of standard poster board

Instructions

    • 1

Place the template on the poster board and lightly trace around it with a pencil.

    • 2

Remove the template. Choose one of the star's outer points and cut inward along the pencil line. Stop when you reach the inner corner.

    • 3

Cut again from the outside of that same point, along the second pencil line. Again, stop when you reach an inner corner.

    • 4

Continue cutting in the same manner, always from an outer point to an inner corner, until the entire star is cut out.

Tips & Warnings

  • Cutting only from the outside inward keeps the star flat. If you tried to cut the star out in one continuous line, the star would bend and possibly crease.

  • You could also use a craft knife to cut out the star, but again, cut each line separately and only in one direction.

  • Use caution when working with scissors or a craft blade.

  • Don't stack two sheets of poster board together to cut out two stars at the same time. One or both of the stars will have ragged or wavy edges.
