How to Replace a Mazda Miata Battery

Although the engine compartment on the Mazda Miata is in the front as on most cars, the battery is in the trunk. This design was for weight distribution for the rear-wheel drive sportster. While engine compartment placement allows a battery to disperse its gases and escape, the trunk location is sealed. The Miata battery features a vent hose to allow the gases to escape from the trunk area.

Things You'll Need:

  • Metric hand wrench set
  • Channel locks
  • Battery terminal cleaner
  • Battery terminal protector spray
  • Battery memory saver
  • Replacement battery
  1. Step 1

Plug the battery memory saver into the cigarette lighter/power outlet source. This portable battery operated device will save the memory of the powertrain control module and any radio theft deterrent or car alarm system in place once the battery is removed from the vehicle.

  2. Step 2

Open the trunk and locate the battery. It's on the right (passenger) side.

  3. Step 3

Disconnect the vent tube from the battery. Wiggle the tube back and forth with your hands, and then pull it off the battery.

  4. Step 4

Remove the retaining nuts on the battery hold-down strap with a hand wrench.

  5. Step 5

Loosen the black-cabled negative battery terminal clamp, with a hand wrench, until it's loose enough for you to wiggle the clamp off of the battery post. Use a pair of channel locks if necessary.

  6. Step 6

Loosen the red\-cabled positive battery terminal clamp and remove it, using the same process as in the preceding step.

  7. Step 7

    Remove the battery.

  8. Step 8

Use a battery terminal cleaner to clean the inside contacts of the negative and positive terminal clamps.

  9. Step 9

Place the new battery on the battery tray and replace the vent tube and hold-down strap.

  10. Step 10

Attach the red cabled-positive battery terminal clamp to the battery first. Be sure to connect it to the positive (+) terminal. Attach the black-cabled negative battery terminal clamp to the negative (-) terminal. Tighten the clamps with a hand wrench.

  11. Step 11

Spray the battery terminal clamps and battery posts with a battery terminal protector spray.

  12. Step 12

Start the Miata to ensure proper operation. Remove the battery memory saver and then close the trunk.
