How to Remove the Headliner in an HHR

A custom headliner is a popular modification for the interior of your vehicle, complete with pattens, special fabrics and a cool design. To get this look, you first must remove the headliner, which appears to be a bit daunting at first. Like anything else, though, if you go about it methodically, you can get the headliner out of your HHR in a few hours.

Open the doors, and use the flathead screwdriver to pop off the plastic covers on the top of the seat belts. Unbolt the top of all four seat belts, using the 3/8-inch ratchet and Torx wrenches.

    • 2

Using the Phillips-head screwdriver, unscrew the front visors and visor hooks. These support the middle of the front section of the headliner.

    • 3

Pull out the pinch molding that goes around the back-hatch seal at the headliner and around the sunroof, if your vehicle is equipped with one.

    • 4

Pop out the dome light from the headliner using the flathead screwdriver. Unplug the wiring harness to the dome light as well with your hands, but if you need extra leverage, use the tip of the flathead screwdriver.

    • 5

Grab the A-pillar interior panel, and pull it back toward the inside of the car to release the clips that secure it to the body. Repeat this process with the B- and C-pillar plastic trim as well. At this point, the headliner should be barely held in place.

Pull the headliner out of the vehicle through the back hatch opening. This could take some shifting and adjusting of the headliner as you go, but eventually it will come out.
