How to Sew Wizard Robes
Wizard costumes have always been a top choice for costume parties, Halloween, and even simple dress-up games for children. Many wizards in popular culture wear long robes, such as those depicted in films like "The Lord of the Rings" or "Harry Potter," which can come in many diverse styles suited to the different characters and worlds. You can sew wizard robes to fit any aesthetic using this basic robes pattern as a guide for your costume.

Make the Wizard Robes Pattern

Have a friend help you take your measurements with a measuring tape. Measure the distance from your shoulder to your ankle and the distance from the wrist to the shoulder. Double the first measurement and add three inches to the second measurement.

Cut a rectangle from your wizard costume fabric that is the length of the first measurement and the width of the second measurement.

Fold the fabric in half lengthwise and lay it out on the floor. Lay down on the fabric in a spread-eagle pose, with your neck at the folded edge.

Have a friend trace around your body with a fabric pencil, loosely outlining the underside of the arms and outside of the legs at about 5 inches away from your body. Also have your friend mark the neck placement.

Cut along the drawn lines at the sides, leaving the neck area alone for now. Pin the sides together to hold them in place.

Lay the wizard robes piece on top of the lining fabric, matching fold lines, and cut an identical piece from the lining fabric. Treat each piece separately for now.
Sew the Wizard Robes

Turn the robes fabric and lining fabric wrong side out, so that the right sides are touching.

Pin the sides of the body together from wrist to hem on each piece, and stitch them 1/2 inch away from the edges. Iron the seam allowances flat.

Mark the center front on each piece with a fabric pencil. Cut along this line from hem to neckline.

Cut a neck hole in each piece of the wizard robes, using your neck placement markings. Make the hole slightly larger than the markings.

Slide the wizard robes fabric inside the lining fabric, so that the right sides of each piece are touching. Line up the sleeve, neck and hem edges and pin them in place. Also pin the side seams together.
Finish the Wizard Costume

Sew the bottom hem edge and center front edges of the robes fabric and lining fabric together, 1/2 inch away from the edges. Iron and trim the seam allowances.

Remove the pins and turn the robes right side through the neck. Fit the lining sleeves inside the outer sleeves.

Fold the sleeve hem edges under 1/2 inch, hiding the raw edges between layers, and pin them in place. Slipstitch the edges together by hand. Repeat this step on the neckline.

Mark button and buttonhole placement on each side of the center front, using the fabric pencil. Stitch buttonholes down one side, using the buttonhole function on your home sewing machine.

Handstitch buttons to the opposite side of the center front, matching your markings.

Tips & Warnings
To make robes that have wider sleeves, simply add a few more inches to the initial body tracing at the arm area. You can even angle the underarm line so that the sleeves are wider at the wrist than at the elbow.
To make robes with a hood, measure the length and depth of the head, and the neck hole on the robes. Draw a sideways view of the hood in a "D" shape, and cut 2 identical pieces in both fabrics. Sew these pieces together at the curved side, leaving the bottom open to be attached to the neck hole.
