How to Disassemble a GE Washing Machine

When parts on your washer fail or need servicing, you need to be able to access them. Most washer cabinets remove completely in one piece from the washer base. This is not the case with GE washers. GE washers disassemble much like dryers are taken apart. To access all the working components inside a GE washer, you will remove the front panel and raise the top panel to disassemble the washer. Instructions

    • 1

Disconnect the power cord of the GE washing machine from the wall outlet. Pull the washer 2 feet away from the back wall. This will allow the top panel to open fully without damaging the wall or the finish on the appliance.

    • 2

Disconnect the clips that secure the front panel of the washer to the cabinet. Insert a putty knife above the front panel directly under the top panel 2 inches from the right corner. Press in on the putty knife to disengage the clip and pull the top of the front panel away from the washer.

    • 3

Insert the putty knife on the left side of the front panel and disengage the clip while pulling the top of the front panel away from the washer. Pull the front panel up to disengage the bottom of the front panel from the base of the washer. Set the front panel out of your way.

    • 4

Use a Phillips-head screwdriver to remove the screws securing the top panel to the sides. The screws are under the front lip of the top panel at each side.

    • 5

Open the washer lid and remove the bleach holder from the inside lip of the washer lid opening. Use the screwdriver to remove the two screws under the bleach holder. Close the washer lid and tape the lid to the top panel with masking tape.

    • 6

Raise the top panel slightly and pull the wiring harness from the door switch on the right side of the washer lid. The connector will pull away using your fingers. Raise the top panel completely, allowing it to rest back on the rear service hinges.
