How to Replace Flute Pads

Daily maintenance of the flute is a necessary part of owning the instrument. Over time the pads will deteriorate, which causes a break between the seal of the pad and the instrument holes. It is necessary to replace the pads to maintain the best sound on the flute. If you wait too long, you will not be able to play the instrument properly. It is best to allow a professional to repad your flute, but you can do it yourself if you have the right equipment.

Instructions

    • 1

Take apart the flute by using a small, flat-head screwdriver; eyeglass screwdrivers work well. Take care when removing the keys. Don't pull or yank them off, as this can break the springs or keys. The screws are located at the ends of the bars. As you remove the keys, place the tiny screws into a plastic container or baggie so they do not get lost.

    • 2

Remove the old pads by popping the plastic cover off the center of the key. The center cap is what holds the pad onto the key. Use a flat-head screwdriver to slide underneath the plastic. Once the center cap has been removed, pull the pad out of the key.

    • 3

Find the right-sized pad to fit into the bottom of the key where the old pad was. Pads come in several different sizes to fit the keys. The key should be snug in the hole. Once you find the correct pad, pop the plastic bolt back into the center cap.

    • 4

Place cardboard key washers under the pads to get them at the correct height. The pads should be level with the key well to provide the seal. Continue adding washers until the pads sit level.

    • 5

Put the keys back on by placing them in the correct positions and screwing them back into place. The metal springs should be popped back into place to create tension on the keys, so that they pop up or lie down properly.

    • 6

Bend the keys down if the washers do not level the pads onto the flute. A good-quality flute will have screws in the center of the keys. They can be tightened in order to level the pads. Once the keys are level, pop the center caps back down on to the center of the keys, and the flute is ready to be played.
