How to Cut Stencils for Tuiles

Tuiles are crisp, dry, fragile cookies known for their distinctive upwardly curved shapes. "Tuile," a French term meaning "tile," refers to the cookies' resemblance to roof tiles. You can shape tuiles in many ways, one of which is by using stencils. Once you have created tuile stencils by either drawing them manually or printing stencil templates from your computer, cutting the stencils is simple using a few rudimentary craft supplies.

Things You'll Need

• Tuile stencil
• Cardboard
• Craft knife

Instructions

1. Place the tuile stencil on a piece of cardboard and position it so that you can cut the cardboard safely and without damaging the underlying surface.

2. Trace over the lines on the tuile stencil with the craft knife.

3. Discard the cut-out pieces when you are finished cutting your tuile stencil.

Tips & Warnings

• You can use scissors to cut a tuile stencil, but using a craft knife is easier.

• Be careful when cutting your stencil; if you damage it, you will have to redraw or reprint your stencil and begin again.
