How to Consolidate Multiple iTunes Libraries

Save

Apple iTunes has become the most popular music and media management program on the market. If you have downloaded a large number of files and media through the iTunes store, changed or upgraded your computer or used iTunes to manage your complete music and video files, you may have multiple iTunes libraries spread out over several computers or hard drives. Apple provides a quick and easy way to consolidate your multiple iTunes library into one location on either your Mac or PC.

Things You'll Need

  • Computer (Mac or PC)
  • Apple iTunes

Instructions

  • Open iTunes and go to "Preferences" in the main menu on your Mac. Choose the "Advanced" icon and if is unchecked, check the box marked "Keep iTunes Music folder organized." If you have a PC, open iTunes, left click on "Edit" and then on "Preferences," and check "Keep iTunes Media folder organized."

  • Decide the location where you want to consolidate all of your iTunes libraries. Click the "Change" button.

  • Select the local drive if you want to create your new library on your computer hard drive or select the external drive of your choice. Highlight your chosen folder and click the "Open" button. Click "OK" to close the Preferences window. For PC, left click on "Change" and on the folder where you wish to store your music.. Left click on "Select Folder" and then on "OK."

  • Click on "OK" to close the "Preferences" window. The new location link will appear in your iTunes folder location box.

  • Select "File" at the iTunes main menu. Navigate to "Library" and choose "Consolidate Library." Left click on "File" at the main menu on your PC. Left click on "Library" and "Organize Library." Left click on "Consolidate files."

  • Confirm your actions by clicking "Consolidate" ("Consolidate files" on PC) when the pop-up message appears. Apple iTunes will now copy and transfer the files currently in your iTunes library to your new location.

  • Delete all of the files in your iTunes library once you have completed the consolidation process to remove them from your computer's hard drive.

  • Go to "File" in the iTunes main menu and select "Add to Library." For PC, left click "File" and then "Add folder to library."

  • Navigate to the location on your computer where you have stored your other iTunes library, select all of the files in that library and click "Open." The iTunes program will now import all of the files from your second library into your new library folder. For PC, left click on the folder you want to add next and click on "OK."

  • Repeat the last two steps for each of your iTunes libraries. This will consolidate all of your media files into one main iTunes folder.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you have several iTunes libraries, you probably have a large number of files. Your new iTunes library destination needs enough disc space for all of your files.
