How to Apply a Paper Cutout Effect In Photoshop

Photoshop includes a variety of interesting effects that can be applied to turn boring images into works of art. The cutout effect simplifies an image in terms of its number of colors and the complexity of its edges, achieving an effect something like that of a paper cutout.

  • Click "Filter," "Artistic" and "Cutout." The Cutout Filter dialog will appear.

  • Adjust the "Number of Levels" slider. This slider controls the overall color depth of the image.

  • Adjust with the "Edge Simplicity" slider until you get the effect you want. Higher values will yield a more jagged and cubist look.

  • Use the "Edge Fidelity" slider to control the amount of detail that edges receive. This yields a different effect than the previous slider: even highly jagged edges can be quite detailed.

  • Click "OK" to apply the filter to your image.
