How to Sell Mulch Wholesale

Starting a business is a great way to earn extra money or start a new career. Many people dream about one day being their own boss. Even in rough economic times, certain types of companies see little or not backlash. Landscaping and gardening is one of those. Companies always need someone to take care of the landscaping and get the lawn ready for the upcoming seasons. Selling wholesale mulch to landscape companies may be a lucrative career.

Instructions

    • 1

Before selling anything, wholesale or retail, you must have the appropriate business license. Selling without a business license can bring you a hefty fine. Take a trip to your local court house or city hall. They will be able to provide you with all the information you need about obtaining a business license.

    • 2

Determine your policy and terms. What types of payment do you except? Do you offer returns and refunds? What is your costumer service policy? You will need to know the answers for these questions before talking to any potential client.

    • 3

Figure out the costs. Before trying to sell your product do the math. Figure out how much it costs you to acquire the mulch. If you are buying it from a source, add in shipping and handling fees. If you are creating the mulch yourself, calculate the total cost of the process including any resources you may use. The figure that you end with is the total cost out of your pocket. This amount is important when deciding what price you should set.

    • 4

Do your research. Call around to other companies that sell mulch and inquire about their prices. This will give you an idea of the going rate for wholesale mulch and whether you can match it.

    • 5

Learn everything about mulch. You must be knowledgeable in your product. Potential clients may have questions about your product. Not having answers to their questions is unprofessional and could very well cost you the sell.

    • 6

Talk to local garden centers, landscaping companies and nurseries. Talk to the owner or person in charge about starting a businesses relationship with them. Ask what they pay for mulch and, if possible, quote them a price that is lower. Only offer a lower price if it is in your budget. Be up front about what your rates are and what type of volume you can handle. Bring samples of the mulch, business cards and an updated price list.

    • 7

Attitude is important. When talking to potential clients it is always important to have a friendly, confident attitude. Look them in the eyes when speaking to them. Be polite and boast about your product.

    • 8

Advertise. No matter how great a product is, if no one knows about it you will not be making any sells. Get the word out about your wholesale mulch business. Place ads in newspapers, send out fliers and have a commercial on the radio. Get business cards printed to hand out to potential costumers.
