How to Make Pockets from Construction Paper

Save

According to the BBC, the word "pocket" comes from the same word as "poke," a small bag used to keep tiny treasures. Today when you think of a pocket you often think of a pouch sewn into shirts or jeans. Although pockets are sometimes ornamental, they are still used to keep small or lightweight items such as pens or coins. Pockets can also be made from construction paper and glued into book covers to hold note cards or other lightweight items.

Things You'll Need

  • Construction paper
  • Scissors
  • Glue
  • Ruler
  • Pencil
  • Measure the back part of the pocket with a ruler. The back part of the pocket may be a hard surface against which you plan to affix the pocket, such as the inside of a book cover or a scrapbooking page. Alternatively, you can use another piece of construction paper to make the back part of your pocket.

  • Draw a square that is the same size or slightly smaller than the back part of the pocket on a sheet of construction paper. This will be the front part of the pocket. Cut out the square with scissors.

  • Spread a thin line of glue around the inside edge of the paper square.

  • Place the paper square glue-side down against the back part of the pocket, whether that is a book cover or another piece of construction paper. Press firmly to create your pocket. Allow the glue to dry.

Tips & Warnings

  • If your paper pocket is affixed to the exterior of a book or scrapbook, you will need to be careful about what is placed inside the pocket. Items that are loose in pockets of this nature can slip out.
