Toto manufactures a number of different toilets that will fit in with just about any bathroom decor. They have both one and two piece models and several low flush models that are easy on the environment. One thing to note about installing a Toto toilet is that some models come with a special PVC outlet pipe that needs to be installed before you place the toilet.

Step 1

Ensure that the plumbing falls within the Toto Toilet's requirements as outlined by the manufacturer. The center of the closet flange on some Toto models, for example, needs to be 12 inches away from the wall.

Step 2

Insert the flange bolts into the flange.

Step 3

Turn the bowl over so that the lid is facing the ground. Apply the wax ring to the outlet of the toilet. Apply a thin bead of plumber's putty along the underside of the bowl.

Step 4

Right the bowl so that the lid is facing up again. Slowly lower the bowl over the flange outlet. This is challenging because you also have to make sure that the flange bolts poke up through the holes in the base of the bowl. Have an assistant help you.

Step 5

Gently press down on the bowl to compress the wax seal in place.

Step 6

Slip the plastic and metal washers on the flange bolts. Screw in the nut hand tight. Then tighten it with one turn of the wrench. Do the same to the bolt on the other side.

Step 7

Attach the tank to the top of the bowl. Make sure that the cone gasket fits into place on the back of the bowl. Drop the tank screws and washers through the holes in the bottom of the tank so that they poke through the bottom. Tighten these hand-tight, and then one turn with the wrench as you did to the bolts on the bottom. On one piece Toto toilets, such as the UltraMax, this step is not necessary.

Step 8

Wrap the tank inlet with plumber's tape. Attach the water inlet hose and then tighten it with the wrench.

Step 9

Turn on the water and allow the tank to fill.

Step 10

Flush the toilet and check for leaks. Caulk around the bottom edge.

Step 5

Install the toilet over the flange. You need to make sure that the outlet at the back of the bowl fits into the rubber gasket on the PVC outlet.

Step 6

Attach the Toto toilet to the mounting brackets. Replace the access covers for the screws when you have finished.

Step 7

Wrap the water inlet with plumber's tape. Attach the water inlet hose.

Step 8

Turn on the water and allow the toilet to fill. Flush and check for leaks.

Step 9

Caulk around the base of the toilet.

Tip

The above steps are just a guideline. Always follow the instructions that came with your Toto toilet model. Allow the wax ring to come to room temperature before installing. This will make it easier to compress.

Warning

Always use the proper safety equipment when using power tools.
