Storage is a premium item in most bedrooms. Every inch of closet space is considered valuable and worthwhile. But some closets have very odd configurations and it is sometimes necessary to construct custom closet rods to fit your specific closet. One tricky closet rod that may seem difficult to make is an outside corner closet rod. With a little careful measurement and cutting, maximize the full corner of your unusual closet.
Things You'll Need
- Tape measure
- Stud finder
- Closet rod brackets
- Closet rod
- Closet rod end cups
- Miter saw
- Carpenter's glue
- Power screwdriver
- 2-inch screw
Install standard closet rod brackets to both walls that form the corner. Use a stud finder and mount the brackets into studs. Use a level to make sure your rods will align.
Install the fixed closet rod cup to one of the end walls. Position the closet rod on the newly installed brackets and place the fixed end cup where the rod contacts the wall. The cup is simply screwed in.
Measure the length of the wall where you have mounted the closet rod brackets that hold the closet rod. Remove the closet rod and measure and mark that measurement on the rod. Add 9 7/8 inches and make a big mark. Repeat this for the second wall, cup and closet rod.
Miter the closet rods at a 45-angle at the big marks and prefit the rods in the closet. Rasp the miter until it fits well. Insert each rod into its cup.
Apply carpenter's glue to the mitered cut faces.
Press the miter together and drill a pilot hole through the end of one of the closet rods and into the center of the miter of the other closet rod.
Use a power screwdriver to screw a 2-inch screw to hold the mitered joint in place.
Screw the rods into place at the brackets using the screws and hardware provided with the brackets.
Tips & Warnings
- Lightly sand the mitered corner if it is rough. This corner rod will allow you to utilize a protruding corner inside a closet.
