How to Replace My Whirlpool Dishwasher Seal

When water is puddling near the front of the dishwasher, it is usually a sign of a faulty dishwasher seal. The seal on a dishwasher fits between the dishwasher cabinet and the dishwasher door. The seal is held in place by compression, rather than hardware.

Over time, the dishwasher seal can become dry and cracked from the heat the dishwasher produces. You can replace the Whirlpool dishwasher seal with a couple of hand tools and some patience.

Things You'll Need

  • Needle nose pliers
  • Small flathead screwdriver
  • New dishwasher seal
  • New pencil
  • Turn the circuit breaker off to the dishwasher. Although there are no electrical components that will be worked on, it is still a good idea to stay on the side of caution.

  • Open the dishwasher door and pull both of the dish racks out of the dishwasher. The dishwasher seal is on the outside perimeter of the dishwasher. By removing the dish racks you give yourself plenty of room to move your hands around while removing and installing the seal.

  • Use a pair of needle nose pliers to pull the old seal out of the dishwasher. Start at one of the bottom ends of the seal to start pulling the out of the dishwasher. Once you have an end started you can begin slowly pulling the seal out by hand. Pull closely from the dishwasher to prevent the back side of the seal from tearing and getting jammed behind the groove.

  • Remove any torn parts of the seal inside the groove with the needle nose pliers. Make sure not to damage the seal groove in the dishwasher. If necessary you can use a small flathead screwdriver to dislodge any pieces of seal.

  • Take the old dishwasher seal along with the model number of your dishwasher to the appliance repair shop. Purchase a new dishwasher seal and compare it to the old one. Make sure the new seal is the same length and has the same groove as the old dishwasher seal.

  • Fill the kitchen sink with enough warm water to cover the new dishwasher seal. Place the seal inside the sink of warm water and allow it to sit for 30 minutes. This will soften the seal and make the seal easier to work with when install the seal in the dishwasher.

  • Find the middle of the top on the new dishwasher seal. Start at the middle top of the dishwasher and press the groove end of the seal into the dishwasher. Work your way down each side and to the bottom, pressing the door seal into the plastic groove in the dishwasher until it pops in place. Use the eraser end of a pencil to assist pressing the new dishwasher seal into place.
