How to Uninstall a Lockset on a Steel Door
Removing a lockset from a steel door is a simple process that can be achieved by a novice do-it-yourselfer. A lock may need to be removed if it is being replaced with a new handle and lockset or if the current lockset is broken. It is also a good idea to replace locksets if the home is a recent purchase to ensure security. Look at the lockset to be removed to see which type of screwdriver you will need.

Remove the screws in the old striker plate located at the end of the door. This is where the latch protrudes into the jamb when the door is locked.

Remove the screws from the inner door handle. Once the screws are removed from the inner handle, the other side of the handle should come apart easily.

Use a flat head screwdriver to remove the knob ring around the exterior knob.

Remove the two long screws from the mounting latch plate on the interior of the handle. Be sure to gather all the pieces of the handle and lockset when removing if you are planning to reuse them.
