Automatic overhead, or garage, doors offer curb appeal, increased home value and an element of safety. To keep from opening overhead doors all around the neighborhood when you push your remote, most garage door openers are coded to specific receivers. There are two types of remote-to-receiver connections: dip switches (found on older models) and newer "smart" remotes.
Things You'll Need
- Overhead door remote
- Overhead door receiver
- Small screwdriver
Determine whether your overhead is operated by dip switches or wireless smart remote by checking the receiver located on the back or side of the opener.
If you have a dip switch system, open the back of the remote with the screwdriver and compare the number settings on the receiver. The dip switches will look and work in a similar manner to a manual counter, by clicking the lever. Both numbers must be the same, so adjust the numbers on the remote to match the receiver.
If you have a wireless smart system, locate the "learn" button on the back of the opener. Hold down the operation button on the remote while you press and release the learn button on the opener, then release the remote button.
