How to Design a Pipe
Pipes are not only for smoking, they are collectible to the pipe enthusiast. Pipes can be made from a variety of woods, meerschaum, and even other materials such as glass and ceramic. Pipe designers take great pride in creating works of art rather than simple smoking devices. The best pipe, however, is one that offers both aesthetic value as well as functionality. It may take a while to become a pipe craftsman, but if you have a creative imagination and a marginal ability to draw, you can design your own artistic pipe creations.

Sketch your pipe design first. Come up with something unique. This means something you can't find anywhere else. Handmade items are typically one of a kind, but the more original design elements you can include, the better your pipe will fare if you are selling it. Do several rough sketches before you settle on working out the details of a finished design.

Determine whether your pipe will be strictly for looks or for smoking as well. You can do more with a pipe that is strictly for display. For a smoking pipe, you will need to take the smoker's comfort into consideration. Whether you will be making a pipe from your design or having a pipe maker do it, be sure to write all of the specifics down, including stem and bowl measurements, materials the bowl will be made from, and any information the pipe maker will need to be aware of to produce your custom pipe.

Do a finished blueprint for your pipe, with the design fully rendered in color and all of the dimension specifics written neatly on the blueprint, as close as possible to the part of the pipe the specific information references. Draw arrows to ensure the correct dimensions are referenced to the right place on the pipe. Include a sketch of your pipe from every angle to provide the pipe maker with a full visual reference from which to work.
