How to Fix Plugged Bathtub Drains
A plugged or clogged bathtub drain can be a pain. It can become blocked by almost anything, from a buildup of hair to a child's toy. But with a few simple steps, you can ensure that the bathtub empties properly again.

Instructions

1
Check the drain for anything that might have plugged it up, if you can. Many times, as in the cases of hair or toy blockages, you can see the object blocking the drain.
-
2
If you can see the blockage, use your finger, a pair of pliers or a bent wire coat hanger to remove it.
-
3
If the blockage is too deep to reach, try a plunger, which will often clear the obstruction.
-
4
If the plunger didn't work, try a plumber's snake. You can purchase a 25-foot snake for less than $25 at most hardware stores.
Using a Plumber's Snake
-
1
Unscrew the plate on the bathtub overflow tube. The plate also serves as the switch for the drain stopper.
-
2
Run the snake, three feet at a time, down the bathtub overflow pipe, twisting it as you push it forward. Some resistance will occur as you push the snake through the trap under the drain.
-
3
Remove or break up the plug or clog in your drain. Eventually, the snake will either push its way through the obstruction, breaking it up, or stop moving forward.
-
4
Pull the snake back out of the drain when you can no longer move it forward. The obstruction should be on the end.
-
5
Clean up and screw the overflow plate back on.

Tips & Warnings
If you don't want to have to wind the plumber's snake back up when you're done, you can purchase a self-winding one, or a plumber's snake on a spool.
