While some might find the sound of a squeaky rocking chair endearing, others might find it downright annoying. If you tend to side with the latter, you can try some methods to reduce or completely eliminate the sound of the squeaking caused by rocking your chair back and forth. Before you send your chair away for repair, or before you throw it out altogether, try these cost-efficient, easy-fix solutions to remove the squeak.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Stop-squeak oil
  • Cooking oil
  • Baby powder
  • Wood glue
  • Paraffin wax

    Getting Rid of the Squeak

  1. Step 1

Spray the joints of the rocking chair with oil. Some products are designed specifically for stopping the squeaking, though these are typically the most expensive solution. You can find these at most home repair, hardware and general stores. The idea behind these oils is that they lubricate the joints to alleviate the sound of the metal pieces sliding against each other, which is causing that annoying squeak when you lean back in your chair.

  2. Step 2

Try lubricating the joints with ordinary non-stick cooking oil. This less expensive solution will yield similar results to other oils on the market. These cooking oils, often made from vegetable oil and other plant-based oils, are not only effective for making sure your food doesn't stick to your frying pan or grill, but also for spraying the joints to reduce or even eliminate the squeaking of your rocking chair.

  3. Step 3

Sprinkle baby powder or other talcum powders on the floor where your chair sits. This is only useful if you have hardwood, tile or other hard floors---not carpet or rugs. The idea behind sprinkling this powder is that it may eliminate the friction caused by your chair sliding over the hard floors. You can even try spraying this powder in the joints themselves to reduce squeaking and give the room a fresh scent.

  4. Step 4

Search your rocking chair for loose components that may be causing the squeaking. You can glue any loose components back in place with wood glue, or by using a paraffin wax to stick the components back in place. If you are somewhat handy, you may consider replacing rusty, old pieces that are causing the squeaking.
