How to Draw an Oval Shape

An oval has an oblong shape and it is made up of two pairs of arcs. A proportional oval can be difficult to draw by hand and cannot be easily replicated using a compass. However, you can fashion your own oval-drawing tool with string and a few pins, which will allow you to draw a handsome oval every time.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Insert the two push pins into whatever surface you will be drawing on. The larger the distance between the pins, the larger the oval you will create. If you are using paper, place it on top of a piece of cardboard before inserting the pins to prevent damage to a table top.

    • 2

Tie a knot in the string to create a loop.

    • 3

Drape the loop of string around the push pins.

    • 4

Place the pencil inside of the loop, pushing the string outward until it is taught and creates a triangle shape between the pencil and both push pins. Place the pencil point onto the drawing surface.

    • 5

Move the pencil clockwise one full revolution around the pins, keeping the pencil point in direct contact with the drawing surface and the string taught as you move around the pins to create an oval.
