How to Identify a Nissan Brake Light Switch

The brake light switch is what activates the brake lights on a Nissan. An audible "clicking" sound can be heard on automatic transmissions when you press on the brake pedal. This is the shifter lock release which is activated by the brake light switch. The switch on all Nissan vehicles is "always on," meaning that you do not need the key in the ignition for the brake lights to work. When the switch fails, you need to identify the brake light switch.

  • Climb into the driver's side foot well.

  • Look behind the brake pedal.

  • Check for a small black box that is located behind the brake pedal. This is the brake light switch. The switch in most Nissan vehicles is located behind the pedal and just above it on the firewall. There will be several wires running off the switch. One of those wires will run down to the back of the pedal itself on vehicles equipped with an automatic transmission.
