How to Touch Up Stone Chips on a Car

Stone chips are perhaps the most irritating type of paint damage your vehicle can suffer. The chips, usually caused by small rocks kicked up by passing cars or lawn mowers, are too small to warrant stripping and repainting, but large enough to be an eyesore. Thankfully, car manufacturers produce touch-up paints that can be used to fill in these small stone chips to get your vehicle looking good as new.

Things You'll Need

• Touch-up paint
• Rag
• Acetone

Instructions

1. Visit an auto parts store or paint supplier to buy the paint that coincides with your vehicle's specific paint number. For most cars, you can find the paint number on the inside of their rear trunk lid.

2. Use a rag dipped in acetone to thoroughly clean the area you are about to paint. Allow the area to dry for a few minutes.

3. Shake the touch-up paint thoroughly. Unscrew the the cap and use the attached brush to dab a small amount of paint into each chip. Lightly brush the paint into every crevice. Allow the paint to dry for 24 hours before driving the vehicle.

Tips & Warnings

• You can use fine grit sandpaper to lightly sand each freshly painted chip to help the new paint blend in a bit better.
