How to Take the Speakers Out of Car Doors

Removing speakers from your car's door is usually a simple process depending on the make, model and year of your car. Some speakers are easily accessible because their covers pry off with a flat-head screwdriver. Others may require you to remove portions of the door trim to access the speaker. The one constant on almost every vehicles is that once you make it to the speaker, all that's required to finish the removal is to unscrew the speaker from its mount and disconnect the speaker wire.

Things You'll Need

  • Disconnect the negative terminal on the car battery for safety. The negative terminal will be labeled with "-" or will be black in color.

  • Determine how your speaker cover is held in place. Look for screws holding the cover in place. If there aren't any screws bolting the cover down, check for screws holding the trim surrounding the speaker. If there aren't any nearby, the speaker cover might merely pop off by prying it with a flat-head screwdriver. If you're stumped, consult the car's owner's manual.

  • Remove the cover and any necessary trim pieces using the appropriate screwdriver as determined in Step 2.

  • Use a Phillips-head screwdriver to remove the screws holding the speaker in place. Pull the speaker out of its mount.

  • Disconnect the speaker wire from the speaker. The speaker wire will be connected to the speaker's terminals or by a wiring harness. Either can be simply pulled apart.
