The belt on a Hoover vacuum cleaner is what gives the machine power to suck up dirt and debris. When your Hoover vacuum begins to lose these functions, it may be time to replace the belt. Replacing the belt on a Hoover vacuum is an inexpensive way to get your vacuum cleaner working properly again. There are various models of Hoover vacuum cleaners so there may be some variations in the way the belt is replaced, but the basics should be the same.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Phillips and/or Flathead screwdriver
  1. Step 1

Unplug the Hoover vacuum cleaner and turn it upside down on the floor. Release the handle so it is not in the locked position.

  2. Step 2

Remove the plate on the bottom of the vacuum. Generally, you will only need to use your thumb to take off the plate but some models may be held in with screws. If this is the case, use a screwdriver to remove the screws and the plate. There may also be retaining clips holding the plate on. Use a flathead screwdriver to pry the cover from the clips.

  3. Step 3

Use the flathead screwdriver to remove the agitator from the vacuum. The agitator is the bristled roller on the underside of the vacuum cleaner. Clean off any hair, string or other debris that may be on the agitator.

  4. Step 4

Slip the old belt off of the motor drive shaft and then the agitator. Usually the belt will fall right off of the agitator once you remove it from the motor drive shaft.

  5. Step 5

Slip the new belt onto the drive shaft, just as the old one was attached. Pull the other end of the belt onto the agitator.

  6. Step 6

Replace the agitator into the bottom of the vacuum cleaner, taking care that the belt is on tightly. Spin the agitator a couple of times to make sure that the belt is on correctly.

  7. Step 7

Replace the bottom plate of the vacuum cleaner and flip it back over.
