How to Fix HTTP 500 Error

Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP) shows error messages when system configurations go awry. Specifically, error message "HTTP 500 Internal Server Error" usually happens when an administrator tries to load a file onto the website. For administrators managing the server, this situation should not be ignored since system configurations are affected. But it takes a team effort to fix the error, and it starts with the end-user notifying the server administrator and ends with the hosting site taking action.

  • Press "Start" and then position the mouse over "Programs."

  • Point to "Administrative Tools" and then click "Internet Information Services."

  • Click "Default Website" and then right-click "Localstart.asp."

  • Click "Properties" and then go to the "File Security" tab.

  • Go to the section "Anonymous access and authentication control" and then click "Edit.

  • Go to the "Authentication Methods" property page and clear "Anonymous access."

  • Make it routine practice to upgrade Internet Information Services (IIS) after you upgrade the server. If you do this, you'll be one step ahead of HTTP errors regardless of their numerical value.
