How to Open a Whirlpool Dryer

Getting into a Whirlpool stand-alone dryer can be surprisingly easy if you know what to look for. Whirlpool manufactures two basic styles of stand-alone dryers, and getting into each style requires a different approach. The process also depends on whether you want to get to the heating components or tub and motor.

Things You'll Need

  • Phillips Screwdriver
  • Quarter-inch nut driver
  • Five-sixteenths nut driver
  • Scraper

Dryers With a Top-mounted Lint Filter

  • Remove the lint filter from the top cabinet panel. Use a Phillips screwdriver to remove the two screws in the filter slot.

Look at the corners where the front cabinet panel meets the top panel. You will see two plastic clips. Use a scraper to push in on these clips, and then lift up on the top panel. The panel will now swing up and back out of your way.

  • Two 5/16 screws connect the front cabinet panel to the sides. Use a nut driver to remove the screws. Lift up on the front panel and it will swing to the right.

You now have access to the tub, motor, and belt.

  • Remove the screws that hold the back panel into place. These may be 1/4-inch or 5/16. One screw may be hidden beneath the electric cord. The terminal block cover will also come off when removing these screws. Set the panel to the side.

You now have access to the heating components.

Dryers With a Lint Filter in the Door

  • Look for two clips located in the corners where the kick panel meets the upper front panel of the dryer. Use a scraper to push in on these clips and swing the kick panel down and away from the rest of the dryer.

This gives you access to the heating components.

  • Look for two screws at the bottom corners of the upper panel once the kick panel is removed. Remove these screws using a 5/16 nut driver.

  • Two more screws will be located at the top corners of the upper panel. Remove these and the upper panel will move out of the way.

This gives you access to the tub, motor, and belt.

Tips & Warnings

  • You can go to the Sears parts Web site to find exploded diagrams of your dryer.
  • Unplug your Dryer before attempting to take it apart. Cabinet panels are made from stamped sheet metal, and the edges can be very sharp. These instructions do not apply to Whirlpool Duet dryers, which require an altogether different process.
