How to Change a GM Manual Window Regulator
General Motors vehicles use a window regulator for raising and lowering the pane of glass inside a door. This regulator is a mechanical lever that is actuated by a hand crank inside the car or truck, which can wear out or become damaged, requiring replacement. The average backyard mechanic can replace a window regulator in about an hour.

1
Disconnect the battery by turning the positive terminal bolt in a counterclockwise direction, then pulling the terminal free. Place the terminal away from metal.
-
2
Remove the interior door panel by turning the inside door handle mount screw counterclockwise, turning the window handle crank screw counterclockwise, then pulling the panel free of the pop rivets that hold it to the metal. Some models could have bolts in the interior arm rest that must also be turned counterclockwise and removed. The plastic pop rivets can harden with age and may require replacement.

Replace the regulator with a new unit by positioning it into the door and securing the mount bolts in a clockwise direction. Restore the glass to its position in the regulator, then secure its clamps or retainer bolts. The regulator and the glass are designed to fit without adjustment in most models, but some manipulation may be required to seat them correctly.
