How to Make Fake Candles

Fake candles can be used to decorate at any time of year but are often used on holidays like Halloween. You can easily make your own fake candles using PVC pipe. PVC pipe candles take only a few tools and can be made in a variety of colors.

Things You'll Need

  • PVC pipe in differing diameters
  • PVC or chop saw
  • Spray foam insulation
  • Hot glue gun
  • Drill
  • Tea lights
  • Flame-retardant spray paint
  • Cut the PVC pipes down to pieces of varying lengths with a PVC or chop saw. Using PVC with different diameters and cutting the pieces in different lengths will create candles of various sizes.

  • Cover the area where you will be making the PVC candles. This will keep insulation from coming into contact with surfaces and also will make clean-up easy.

  • Fill all of the pipes with spray foam insulation. Set the pipes upright and add insulation until you are a half-inch from the top of the pipe. The insulation will expand and come out the top of the pipe. Allow the foam to completely dry, then use the saw to trim the top off of the foam so that it is even with the top of the pipe.

  • Drill a hole for a tealight. This hole should be a slightly larger diameter than the tea light. Drill slowly to remove the foam neatly.

  • Create wax drips with hot glue. A high-temperature glue gun will create hotter, runnier glue, which makes the best drips. To create drips, squeeze glue around the top rim of the candle and let it run naturally down the sides.

  • Spray the entire candle with spray paint. This will cover any markings on the PVC pipe and make the entire candle uniform in color. You can use any color of fire-retardant spray paint that you want to make the candle, and get tea lights to match.

  • Place the tea light in the spot that you created for it. Light the tea light just as you would light a larger candle. Your fake candle will glow.
