How to Speed Up Your Computer Internet Access

Computers eventually suffer performance problems. These are caused by errors, outdated programs and fractured files on hard drives. Dangerous malware attacks and cluttered registries with obsolete information also contribute. All of these maladies slow computers dramatically and cause Internet access delays. Software is readily available to repair these problems.

Things You'll Need

  • Windows XP Operating System
  • Commercial or freeware registry maintenance software
  • Commercial or freeware malware protection software
  • Clean the hard drive. The Windows Disk Cleanup utility removes temporary Windows and Internet files, downloaded Microsoft Active-X controls, Java applets, obsolete files and remaining remnants from deleted files.
    • Click START
    • Click on All Programs
    • Click on Accessories
    • Click on System Tools
    • Click on Disk Cleanup
    • With multiple drives, select the drive to be cleaned
    • On the Disk Cleanup For dialog box, click on the file types that are to be cleaned. This will include files in the Recycle Bin, Setup Log Files, Temporary Files and others.
    • Click OK and confirm by clicking YES

  • Check the hard drive for errors. The Windows Error Checking utility tests the hard drive for errors, bad sectors and misplaced files and folders.
    • Close all open files
    • Click Start
    • Double-click My Computer
    • Right-click the hard disk to be checked
    • Click Properties
    • Click Tools
    • Click Check Now
    • Click Scan for and Attempt Recovery of Bad Sectors
    • Click Start
    • If bad sectors are found, click on Fix

  • Defrag the hard drive. The Windows Disk Defragmenter utility unites fragmented files scattered throughout the hard drive.
    • Click Start
    • Click on All Programs
    • Click on Accessories
    • Click on System Tools
    • Click on Disk Defragmenter

  • Clean the registry. The computer's registry stores information about programs, system settings and user profiles. With time, some of this information is outdated and detrimental to computer efficiency. There are numerous commercial and freeware registry cleaners available. Two popular freeware programs are the Free Windows Registry Repair and the AML Free Registry Cleaner. Both programs also provide an option to restore a computer's pre-cleaned status.

  • Remove malware from hard drive. Malware is a term used for spyware, viruses, trojans and worms. These computer invasions require specialized software to eliminate them from computers. The free edition of AVG Anti-Virus is a popular anti-malware program that protects a computer while quietly running in the background. When connected to the Internet, it automatically updates its malware signature files for up-to-date protection.

Tips & Warnings

  • Computer maintenance must be performed routinely. Failure to do so will slow Internet browsing to a crawl and may ultimately result in display freeze-ups and program malfunctions.
  • Software used to repair these problems must match a computer's operating system. These instructions are specific to Microsoft's Windows XP and will not operate on non-Windows systems computers.
