When it comes to racing, the quality and condition of racing tires are as important as a fast engine. High cyclic stress and excessive temperatures during racing change the consistency of tire rubber, altering performance. When race tires are softened, several benefits are achieved such as increased traction, decrease in lap time and a reduction in heating tires during racing. There are numerous solvent-based compounds on the market used to soften race tires and most use the same method of application.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Tire softening compound
  • Container
  • 4" Roller or brush
  • Wire brush
  1. Step 1

Using a wire brush, scuff the sides and bottom of tires.

  2. Step 2

Pour a small amount of tire softening compound in container.

  3. Step 3

Dip brush or roller into softening compound, wiping any excess on the inside rim of the container.

  4. Step 4

Apply tire softening compound directly to all areas of the tire using the brush or roller, while rotating the tire to achieve an even application.

  5. Step 5

Allow tires to dry for at least 2 hours and repeat application for a total of three applications.

Tips & Warnings
  • Best results are achieved when the soften compound is applied 24 to 36 hours prior to racing. After applying the last coat of tire softener, some racers wrap each tire with saran wrap to eliminate evaporation and remove prior to racing.
  • Use caution when working with tire softening compounds in enclosed areas and other chemical compounds such as fuel, oil and cleaners. Exercise caution near fire or equipment with the ability of causing combustion, as tire softening compounds may be flammable. Tire softening is deemed illegal in certain venues of racing.
