How to Tow an S-10 Pickup

The year 2004 had its share of firsts and lasts -- Google launched Gmail, the series finale of the sitcom "Friends" aired, and the Boston Red Sox won the World Series for the first time in 86 years. It was also the last year Chevrolet made the S10 pickup. Towing your S10 -- either for mechanical breakdown or recreational towing, such as behind a motorhome -- takes special consideration so you don't damage drivetrain components.

Wheels Up

  • The two most common methods of recreational towing are "dinghy" towing -- all four wheels on the ground -- and dolly towing -- the drive wheels are set on a dolly and the two non-drive wheels are left on the ground. Chevrolet warns against using either of these methods for your S10 because they leave wheels in contact with the road. To tow your pickup safely, all four wheels have to be off the ground. This applies to both two- and four-wheel-drive versions. Use a flatbed tow for mechanical breakdown, and a trailer or dual-dolly tow behind a recreational vehicle.
