Things You'll Need:
- New spark plug wires
-
Step 1
Allow the engine to cool down for 20 minutes before you begin working under the hood of your Chevy Prizm.
-
Step 2
Open the hood and identify the spark plug wires. In a Chevy Prizm the spark plug wires are black.
-
Step 3
Your new spark plug wires will be labeled in order of length; lay them out accordingly.
-
Step 4
Begin at one end of your Chevy Prizm's engine. Remove only the first spark plug wire by pulling on the boot of the plug wire until the wire pops off.
-
Step 5
Remove the other end of the same wire from the distributor cap by pulling on the end of the wire.
-
Step 6
Inspect the spark plug while you have the wire disconnected. A good spark plug will be lightly coated with grayish brown deposits. A damaged or bad spark plug will look black or have visible damage. If the spark plug is damaged, you should replace it to keep your engine running smoothly.
-
Step 7
Replace the old wires in sequence with new spark plug wires of the same length or number. Most cars have a small plastic piece with slots that hold the wires in place, to avoid having them hit each other or a part of the engine. Be sure to insert each new wire firmly into its slot. The wire will make a quiet pop when it snaps onto the spark plug.
