How to Install Cabinet Locks

If you have a filing cabinet in which you keep sensitive documents or confidential material, you should consider installing a cabinet lock. A cabinet lock will keep those with wandering eyes from looking into your files. Although it is not intended to be foolproof, you will be alerted when security has been breached and someone has broken the lock.

  • Take out the top drawer from the cabinet and set it aside.

  • Find the knockout for the cabinet lock. It will be located at the top right of the cabinet, and is an oval that has been punched in the metal in preparation for those who want to "knock it out" and install a lock.

  • Using a punch and hammer, tap on the center of the knockout to remove it.

  • Place the key for the lock into the lock cylinder, and turn the key so that the bolt from the lock is facing up. Insert the lock cylinder and key into the knockout hole, keeping the bolt facing up.

  • Turn the key in a clockwise direction 1/4 turn. Take the retaining clip that came with the lock assembly, slide it over the lock cylinder flush against the inside of the cabinet.

  • Place the linkage piece that came with the lock assembly into the hole in the lock bolt. Turn the linkage piece to face down, and place its square end into the square hole for it in the lock.

  • Replace the top drawer in the cabinet and you are finished.
