How to Make a Twisted Ribbon Quilt Border Design

Save

The Twisted Ribbon quilt border is one of those deceptive borders where the design depends on color and fabric choice. Made completely of simple triangles, it looks like a curling ribbon falling down the side of your quilt. This border is easy enough for beginners, yet looks impressive with many quilt styles.

Things You'll Need

  • Three cotton fabrics
  • Scissors
  • Needles
  • Pins
  • Cotton thread
  • Choose your fabric carefully for this design. You will need three fabrics: one main fabric in a medium tone, one accent fabric that is darker than the main fabric (ideally a darker version of the same fabric), and one background fabric that will stand apart from the first two. For instance, for a blue ribbon you could go with a French blue main fabric, navy blue accent fabric and white background.

  • Construct a pattern by folding a square of paper in half diagonally, then in half again along the other diagonal direction. Cut along one diagonal, making two half-square triangles. Cut one triangle piece in half again along the remaining fold, creating two quarter-square pieces. Each quilt block will consist of one half-square piece in main fabric, one quarter-square piece in accent fabric, and one quarter-square piece in background fabric.

  • Sew together one background and one accent triangle, short edges together. This will combine to make a half-square triangle. Sew this to one main fabric triangle to complete one block. Repeat this until all blocks are made.

  • Lay out your blocks in a row to create your border. Lay the first block with the long edge of the background fabric on the right hand side. Lay the block directly above it with the long edge of the background fabric on the left hand side. Alternate laying out these blocks until the border is complete. Sew each block to the one above it to finish sewing the border.
