How to Identify a Chevy Motor

A reliable way to identify a Chevrolet motor is through the engine block casting code. This code identifies the engine as manufactured by Chevrolet, as well as what year it was cast and what its cubic inch displacement (CID) is. The code is stamped on the engine block during manufacturing and is intended to be a permanent identifier for the engine block.

1. Remove components from the engine if necessary until you have a clear view of the area above the bellhousing mounting surface on the engine block. The number may be on the driver's side or the passenger's side of the block depending on the year of casting and the type of block.
