Things You'll Need:
- Screwdriver
- Masking tape
- Needle nose pliers
- Volt-ohm meter
-
Step 1
Disconnect the power supply to the dryer by unplugging from the wall outlet.
-
Step 2
Use a screwdriver to remove the control panel mounting screws. Depending upon your model these screws will be on top of the control panel or on each end toward the bottom.
-
Step 3
Pull the control panel forward to access the inside of the panel. On some models of electric dryers the control panel can be set back to rest on hinges.
-
Step 4
Inspect the dryer timer for burn marks or loose components. If the leads are burnt or damaged the timer will need to be replaced.
-
Step 5
Locate the timer motor inside the control panel. Several wires are connected to the timer motor. The two larger ones are the power supply to the timer.
-
Step 6
Use a pair of needle nose pliers to remove one of the power wires from the timer. Grab the wire at the lead and pull it off of the dryer timer terminal.
-
Step 7
Set the scale on your volt-ohm meter to RX1. Set the timer to a drying cycle by turning the knob on the outside of the console.
-
Step 8
Place one probe of the volt-ohm meter to the loose wire and the other probe to the power terminal on the timer that still has a wire connected.
-
Step 9
Look at the reading on the volt-ohm meter. It should read zero. If it comes back with any other reading the timer needs to be replaced.
