The windshield wiper motor controls the function of the wiper arms and blades. Slow or sluggish wiper blade action indicates a dying wiper motor. Because windshield wiper motors are sealed units, they must be replaced once they burn out. New models do not have rebuild kits available. Thankfully, installing a new motor is easy.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Verify that the windshield motor is malfunctioning. Turn on the wiper motor using the wiper controls in the vehicle. If the wiper action seems sluggish, or if the wipers do not turn on, check the fuse for the wipers in the fuse panel. Remove the fuse panel and locate the wiper fuse using the fuse diagram on the top of the fuse cover. Remove the fuse for the wiper motor with the supplied fuse puller (on the fuse cover) and check to see whether the fuse has burned out (the metal strip in the fuse will appear to be broken). If the fuse is OK, put the fuse back into the wiper motor fuse slot.

  2. Step 2

Disconnect the negative cable from the battery. Loosen the retaining nut on the cable running to the negative battery terminal. Slide the cable off the terminal.

  3. Step 3

Unplug the electrical plug running to the motor on the passenger side of the vehicle. The motor looks like a small canister that is bolted to the firewall.

  4. Step 4

Remove the bolt holding the wiper motor to the wiper arms.

  5. Step 5

Remove the bolts holding the wiper motor to the firewall.

  6. Step 6

Pull the motor out and install a new motor. Installation is the reverse of removal.
