How to Hook Up a Hot Tub

A hot tub can be a good way to find relaxation. It can also be a good investment in your home. If you decide to purchase a hot tub, there are obviously a few things to consider, like whether to put the hot tub indoors or outdoors. In other words, what would be the perfect location on your property for your own "personal spa vacation." But whatever decisions you make regarding your new tub, it still remains a great way to get away, without having to go away.

  • Find out what the national and local code standards are for your area. Some areas may require permits to install a hot tub inside or outside of your home. Also, these codes will specify how the tub needs to be installed.

  • Hire a licensed electrician who is qualified to hook up hot tub wiring. The electrical hook up of a hot tub is not recommended as a "do-it-yourself" task. In the worst case scenario, a bad electrical hook up can mean a strong danger of electrocution. In less severe cases, the wiring work may not meet the official code standards or may void your hot tub warranty.

  • Decide how you will refill your hot tub. The manual refilling of a hot tub (with a hose) is an option, but not too desirable. Most people may choose to have a direct plumbing hook up for their hot tub. Depending on the tub manufacturer and the placement of your tub, the plumbing work may be a simple task or it may require the assistance of a professional plumber or contractor.
