Making ornaments for your family Christmas tree is a wonderful way to create family heirlooms. Beaded tree ornaments are easy to make and economical enough to fit a tight budget. These simple beaded ornaments can be crafted with purchased beads or by using a box of old vintage necklaces. If the beads belonged to a beloved family member, they will offer a special meaning when complete. Vintage beads can also be found at local thrift stores and auctions.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Computer and printer
  • Pipe cleaners in assorted colors
  • Beads with holes big enough to insert pipe cleaners
  • Wood skewer
  • Utility scissors
  • 1/8-inch wide ribbon
  • 2 white and tinsel pipe cleaners

    Monogrammed Beaded Tree Ornaments

  1. Step 1

Choose a font style on your computer for your initial. Type the letter and enlarge it to approximately 4 inches tall and print. Use pipe cleaners that coordinate with your chosen beads. Lay the pipe cleaners on the letter's lines and shape them to match. Allow an extra 1/2 inch on all ends for curling later. Do not connect any intersecting lines at this time.

  2. Step 2

String beads on the shaped pipe cleaners, completely filling them except for the extra 1/2 inch on all ends. Wind and twist the pipe cleaners at the intersections to secure.

  3. Step 3

Wind the extra at the ends of each letter around a wood skewer to curl. Remove the skewer. The curled ends will finish the monogram and prevent the beads from slipping off. Cut a 1/8-inch wide piece of white ribbon 6 inches long. Insert under the beads at the top of the ornament or through a curled end. Bring the ends together and tie in a knot to create a hanger.

  4. Snowflake Beaded Tree Ornament

  5. Step 1

Cut two white and tinsel pipe cleaners in half, creating four equal pieces. Hold the four pieces together, matching the ends. Twist the center of the pipe cleaners one complete turn. Evenly separate the ends to form an eight pointed snowflake shape.

  6. Step 2

Thread an identical bead on each snowflake end and push to the twisted center. Add additional beads on each snowflake end in a pattern of your choice. Separate them evenly on the pipe cleaners for a pleasing design.

  7. Step 3

Curl the ends of each snowflake pipe cleaner around a wood skewer and remove. Cut a 1/8-inch wide piece of white ribbon 6 inches long. Insert the ribbon through a curl on one pipe cleaner end. Bring the ends together and tie into a knot to create a hanger.

Tips & Warnings
  • Pony beads and faceted craft beads work well for these projects. If utility scissors are not available, use old scissors. After cutting the wire of the pipe cleaners, they will no longer effectively cut fabric and paper. Using the same idea as the monogram ornament, write a whole name. Use beading wire and smaller beads, fill the length of the wire first and then form into a name written in cursive.
