When setting up a swimming pool, it is important to maintain clean water with good chemical balance. To achieve these results, it is critical to install a proper pool pump and pool filter. The pump moves the water from the pool through the filter and back into the pool. Using pool hose connections and pool hose clamps to hook the filter up to the pump and pool is fairly easy.

Things You'll Need:

  • Pool hose
  • Six hose clamps
  • Screwdriver
  • Two large paving stones
  • Leveling tool

How to Install a Pool Pump

  1. Step 1

Select a location for the pool pump. Install it as close to the filter as possible for maximum efficiency. The pool pump must sit level on the ground, well below the pool water level.

  2. Step 2

To create a level spot for the pump place two large paving stones at the site, and set the assembled pool pump and filter on them. Use a leveling tool to ensure the two stones are level.

  3. Step 3

Begin installing the pump by attaching one pump hose to the skimmer pipe below the skimmer basket on the side of the pool. Use a hose clamp, and tighten it with a screwdriver. Attach the other end of the hose to the pump and secure it with a hose clamp.

  4. Step 4

Attach the return hose to the return fitting pipe on the pool, and secure it with a hose clamp. Connect the other end of the hose to the pool filter return valve, and secure it with a hose clamp. The pool filter return valve is normally found on or near the top of the filter.

  5. Step 5

Attach the final hose to the pool pump and pool filter. Most newer pool filters and pool pumps have a union to connect the pump and filter together using a large screw. If your pump and filter do not have that connect, use another piece of hose, and connect the pump and filter securing with two hose clamps. Your pump is now installed and ready for priming and use.

Tips & Warnings
  • Inspect all hoses and connections. Turn the hose clamp screws to tighten further if needed.
  • Do not install the pump while it is plugged into an electrical outlet.
