The idea of making homemade lotion may seem complicated, but it's actually quite simple. As you become more comfortable with the process, you can play with different fragrances and change the way you make the base of the lotion, perhaps by using scented waters or various butters, such as shea butter. Until then, keep it simple and experiment with essential oils and fragrances.
Things You'll Need
- ¼ cup emulsifying wax
- ¼ cup olive oil
- Microwave-safe bowl
- 24 to 35 drops of essential oil
- 1 ¼ cup hot water
- Small canning jar
Combine the emulsifying wax and olive oil in a microwave-safe bowl. Microwave for about a minute, or until the wax has melted.
Add the essential oil to the wax and oil mixture using the eyedropper. Add as much fragrance as you'd like, but anything over about 35 drops will be very strongly scented.
Pour the hot water into the wax and oil mixture. It should turn a milky white color.
Transfer the lotion into a small canning jar. Twist on the lid and give the lotion a good shake.
Let the mixture rest and cool overnight. When you wake up, your lotion will be thick and ready to use.
Tips & Warnings
- Emulsifying wax and various essential oils can be purchased very cheaply at online retailers; see Resources for one source. Some essential oils come with a treatment pump, which allows you to pump out small droplets from the bottle. If you are using oils with treatment pumps, you may want to add closer to 35 droplets, as the pump will disperse a little less than an eye dropper. Use a light-colored olive oil for this lotion. If you don't like the scent of olive oil, you can also use hazelnut oil or grapeseed oil.
- Always clearly label the lotion jars so they're not mistaken for something else.
