Introduced in 2000, the Chrysler PT Cruiser is available in a 2.4-liter, 4-cylinder engine in either turbo or non-turbo. It also may come as a manual or automatic transmission. The starter in the PT Cruiser is located on the bottom of the front of the engine below the cooling fan. It is placed between the transaxle and the oil pan. To remove and replace it will require the removal of other components in the way.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Ratchet, extension and socket set
  • Wrench set
  • Replacement starter
  1. Step 1

Disconnect the negative battery terminal from the battery and isolate it so it does not come into contact with the negative battery post during the procedure. Remove the air cleaner box cover, the engine structural collar, the starter electrical connections, the starter bolts and then the starter. Other components in the way include the power steering hose support bracket, the bending strut and, on manual transmissions, the clutch slave cylinder.

  2. Step 2

Install the new starter and tighten the starter bolts using a ratchet and socket or wrench. Reconnect the electrical connections and then tighten them.

  3. Step 3

Install the engine structural collar and the five bolts to hold it in place. Hand tighten the collar to transaxle bolt. Reposition the power steering support bracket and then install the collar to oil pan bolt. On manual transmission Cruisers, place the clutch slave cylinder in place and hand start the bolts.

  4. Step 4

Place the bending strut into position and hand start the bolts.

  5. Step 5

Tighten the collar to transaxle/transmission bolt, install the bolts through the bending strut and then tighten all the remaining bolts.

  6. Step 6

Reinstall the air box cleaner cover and then replace the negative battery terminal clamp and tighten.

  7. Step 7

Test start the Cruiser to ensure the starter is working.

Tips & Warnings
  • In addition to the same procedure illustrated above, on the 2.4-liter turbo engine in the PT Cruiser, you will need to access the upper starter bolt by pushing the inner cooler up and out of the way and then disconnect the inner cooler lower hose from the inner cooler. Remove the retaining nuts from the inner cooler tube. Reverse the procedure after the starter is installed.
